Our Story

Peddler Mac’s takes its name from Michael J. McLoughlin, known locally as “Peddler Mac”.

A stonemason, carpenter and publican, he was a familiar figure in rural Leitrim in the early 20th century, cycling from town to town with goods for the local community.

His name became associated with hard work, local character and the kind of everyday hospitality that grows naturally in small Irish towns, where people know one another and every errand can turn into a conversation.

Together with his wife Evelyn, Mac ran a small grocery and hardware business in the village of Effrinagh, Co. Leitrim.

In the late 1940s he converted the family parlour into a public house, creating The Swan Lake Inn, a warm gathering place where neighbours met to share stories, news and a pint.

It was more than a business. It was a local meeting place built on welcome, familiarity and the simple idea that a good pub should always feel like part of the community it serves.

That spirit of hospitality travelled down the River Shannon to Athlone, one of Ireland’s most historic towns and a traditional meeting point at the heart of the country.

Today Peddler Mac’s in Athlone carries that legacy forward. Inspired by the character and work ethic of our great-grandfather, the pub celebrates the timeless traditions of the Irish local: great pints, live music, conversation and a warm welcome from the first customer of the day to the last call of the night.

Our pub in Athlone is shaped by those values. It is a place for familiar faces and first-time visitors alike, for after-work pints, weekend gatherings, music sessions and the kind of nights that begin casually and end with one more round.

From the first customer through to last orders, the aim is simple: to keep alive the warmth, generosity and sense of belonging that defined the old local pubs we grew up hearing about.

Named for our great-grandfather, but built for the people of Athlone today.

Peddler Mac’s looks back with respect, but it lives firmly in the present: an Athlone pub shaped by old values, local character and the belief that the best bars are still the ones that make everyone feel at home.

Whether you call in for a quiet pint, meet friends for live music, or settle in for a long evening in the heart of town, the hope is always the same: that Peddler Mac’s feels like a proper local from the moment you walk through the door.
